With news having come in that the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) initial public offer (IPO) has already got over-subscribed, it might appear that reviewing this IPO is an exercise in futility. Nonetheless, we are undertaking it with a view to informing our readers about its pros and cons, and to influence those who have not yet applied. This is the first (IPO) by a state-run company after a hiatus of 18 months. The last public sector unit to have tapped the market was Rural Electrification Corp in February 2008. NHPC is issuing 10 per cent fresh equity while the government is disinvesting 5 per cent of its stake.
Objectives of the issue
The company plans to raise Rs 5,032-6,039 crore at the lower and upper end of the price band. Of the proceeds, Rs 1,677.8-2,012.8 crore will go to the government. The proceeds will be utilised to part-finance the development cost of projects, namely Subansiri Lower, Uri-II, Chamera-III, Parbati-III, Nimoo Bazgo, Chutak and Teesta Low Dam-IV, and for other corporate purposes.
Company profile
The company is a mini Ratna-I category PSU dedicated to the development of hydroelectric projects. It has so far developed 13 hydroelectric power stations and currently has an installed capacity of 5,175 MW, which includes two power stations with a combined capacity of 1,520 MW belonging to NHDC, its subsidiary.
NHPC’s projects are located predominantly in North and North East India, in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Sikkim and West Bengal. It is currently constructing 11 projects which will increase its installed capacity by 4,622 MW. The company is awaiting government sanction for another five projects with an anticipated capacity of 4,565 MW. In addition, government sanction for certain joint venture projects with an anticipated capacity of 2,166 MW is also awaited. The capacity expansion plans of the company are expected to take its capacity to more than 9,000 MW by FY2013.
