U.S. must lead global economic recovery

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, visiting recession-bound Ireland, said on Sunday the United States was working hard to fix its own economy so it could propel growth in the rest of the world.

“We’re very conscious of the fact that the United States must right its own economic boat in order to lead the global recovery,” she said at a news conference with Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen.

President Barack Obama’s administration launched a $787 billion stimulus package shortly after taking office in January and is considering other measures to fight joblessness, which has stayed persistently high.

Ireland’s export-driven economy has been especially hard hit by the global crisis and its own domestic housing market crash.

Clinton offered encouragement to the Irish Republic and neighboring Northern Ireland as they rebuild their economies and said the Obama administration was aware of its role in the world economic order.

“I don’t think a day goes by that this administration, particularly the president and the economic team, are not focused on what more we can do,” Clinton said. “The responsibility that our country and our government has assumed is one that we will continue to see through.”

Cowen, whose Green coalition partners reaffirmed on Saturday their commitment to staying in government and supporting his financial reforms, said global growth would improve conditions in his country. “From an Irish point of view, return of economic growth worldwide is critical to an export-led economy like ours,” he said.
