European equities mostly advanced Tuesday, as investors eyed the upcoming holiday break and US economic data, and digested gains made overnight on Wall Street and earlier in Tokyo.
In late morning trade, Frankfurt’s DAX 30 won 0.09 percent to 6,162.42 points and the Paris CAC 40 added 0.06 percent to 4,003.10, while London’s benchmark FTSE 100 index slid 0.10 percent to 5,705.07 points.
The Stoxx 50 index of top eurozone shares increased by 0.24 percent to 2,954.50 points.
“Investors remained perplexed as to whether to build on equity positions or not as we head into the end of the quarter and a long bank holiday weekend,” said analyst Nick Serff at financial spread-betting firm City Index.
“The miners are stronger yet again, with the sector benefiting from stronger copper prices.”
Financial markets were somewhat subdued before the upcoming Easter holiday break in most European countries and Friday’s crucial unemployment data release in the United States.
Markets were given a strong lead from Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.42 percent to its highest level since September 26, 2008, the beginning of the global downturn.
Asian stocks rose on Tuesday on optimism that key data due this week in the United States and Japan will show a strengthening of the global economy.
In the United States the government will release Friday its non-farm payrolls figures for March, with forecasts suggesting about 200,000 jobs were created.
And traders in Asia will keep a close eye on the release of the Bank of Japan’s quarterly Tankan report of business sentiment on Thursday, with most expecting a fourth straight rise.
London investors on Tuesday absorbed news that the British economy grew by 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009, emerging from a deep recession at a faster pace than previously thought.
Gross domestic product — the value of all the goods and services produced in the economy — grew by 0.4 percent in the three months to the end of December. The previous reading was for 0.3-percent expansion.
“The major economic news today has been the latest revision to the fourth quarter GDP data for the UK, bumped up to 0.4 percent,” said IG Index analyst Tim Hughes.
“But in keeping with the somewhat disinterested air markets seem to have ahead of Easter, this has not caused any particular excitement for stocks or foreign exchange,” he added.
Back in Japan, the Tokyo stock market rallied 1.01 percent, with the Nikkei ending at its highest level since October 2, 2008, helped by the data showing unemployment was unchanged at 4.9 percent, in line with expectations.
Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong rose 0.65 percent, while Sydney gained 0.40 percent.
New York stocks were boosted Monday by news that consumer spending rose 0.3 percent in February from 0.4 percent the previous month, while personal income was flat following an upwardly revised 0.3 percent growth in January. Commercial Loan Workout.
